Friday the 13th (2009)
A Reboot To Remember
Taking A Fresh Approach to Jason Voorhees
Debuting in 1980 'Friday the 13th' became a slasher icon that haunted the nightmares of a whole generation. The series, however, had grown stale & formulaic after nine films, leading to a critical and commercial disaster with Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday.
In 2009, the franchise was revived with a reboot simply titled 'Friday the 13th'. This new approach, directed by Marcus Nispel and starring Jared Padalecki, aimed to revitalize the franchise by staying faithful while also making a few key changes.
Familiar Yet Different
The main story is still there — young camp counselors are terrorized and killed one by one by the mysterious killer Jason Voorhees. However, this reboot introduces some changes. Jason is given a more brutal backstory and updated look while the characters are given more depth than before.
The film also benefits from some genuinely creepy moments. The setting is appropriately isolated and the atmosphere is tense. Nispel's direction keeps the pace moving and the kills are suitably gruesome.
A Worthy Remake
While it may not be as iconic as the original, 'Friday the 13th' (2009) is a satisfying and effective reboot that succeeds in bringing the franchise back to its roots while also adding some new elements.
It is a worthy addition to the series and a solid entry in the slasher genre. Fans of the original will find much to enjoy, and newcomers will find a fresh and terrifying take on a classic horror icon.
